81 Acres of Natural Splendor, Cachi, Cartago 30105, Costa Rica
Few places combine natural beauty, tranquility, and healthy living as harmoniously as Costa Rica’s Orosi Valley - and few properties in the valley can match Tierra Serena. For nearly two decades, its owners have tended these 81 acres of forest, meadow, and clear streams with a light hand. They planted native hardwoods and built trails and interior roads while preserving the land’s ecological character. The main house, designed by an international architectural firm, was designed to complement its surroundings, so it fits gracefully within the landscape rather than competing with it. Close by, a waterfall offers a rare place of stillness, where the sound of falling water is all that breaks the quiet. Trails wind through the woodland, some framed on both sides by 100-foot eucalyptus trees that form a tall, shaded corridor. A walk anywhere on this majestic property, even a short one, is deeply restorative. The overall result is hard to find: an impressive modern house, cabin and outbuildings on substantial acreage with a manicured, well-tended feel.
THE VALLEY
The Orosi Valley offers a rare combination of natural splendor, serenity, and modern convenience. Nestled among the emerald mountains of Costa Rica’s Central Highlands, it is one of the country’s great natural treasures. Elevation softens the tropical climate, producing warm days, refreshing evenings, and a landscape of almost perpetual green. With its extraordinary biodiversity, picturesque villages, and atmosphere of timeless tranquility, the valley embodies the essence of pura vida. Centuries-old colonial landmarks and generations of coffee-growing tradition give the region an authentic Costa Rican character, largely untouched by mass tourism. In the towns of Orosi, Cachi, and Ujarras, life moves at an unhurried pace, traditional hospitality is a cherished way of life, and newcomers are warmly welcomed. Yet this natural sanctuary lies within easy reach of Cartago’s urban amenities, state-of-the-art medical facilities, shopping, and cultural attractions.
ARRIVAL
Tierra Serena has 1,000 feet of frontage on an asphalt road, with three private entrances. From the principal gate, a half-kilometer drive follows a clear stream through mature plantings and flowers to the main residence, an approach that sets the tone for everything beyond. A second gate opens to a rustic two-bedroom cabin and a storage building, and the third entrance leads to a natural access road into the property interior.
THE LAND
The estate unfolds across rolling terrain of forest, meadow, and stream, with sweeping views of mountain, valley, and sky. From the property’s higher ground, Lake Cachí glistens a few miles away. Nearly a mile of trails, crossing four steel footbridges, and a network of interior gravel roads make the whole property easy to explore. Along them grow towering eucalyptus, Spanish and highland cedar, Costa Rican oak, and alder, while yellow and pink trumpet trees and the orange-flowered poró mark the seasons. Orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, begonias, and passionflowers flourish across the grounds, and citrus, guava, banana, and macadamia are woven through the plantings. More than 200 bird species have been recorded on the property, among them toucans, tanagers, and flocks of yellow-tailed oropendola. Blue morpho butterflies and hummingbirds frequent the flower gardens and white faced capuchin monkeys are sometimes seen.
THE RESIDENCE
Inside the fully furnished house, a spacious great room unites the kitchen, dining, and living areas in a setting that is equally suited to daily living and relaxed entertaining. A tranquil tiered interior garden brings greenery into the heart of the residence and a broad covered veranda wraps around three sides, providing inviting space for outdoor dining, conversation, or quiet reflection. A detached casita 30 feet from the main house is available for guests, and a rancho on the house grounds offers a restful setting for open-air gatherings, complete with a coffee wood-fired pizza and bread oven. In addition, a separate two-bedroom guest cabin near the public road provides accommodations, complemented by an office and storage building, additional outbuildings, and a scenic overlook.
THE FUTURE
Tierra Serena was conceived as a part-time personal retreat for its owners, who chose to improve the land while preserving its ecological character. That care leaves it open to many futures: a private residence or family retreat, a boutique lodge, a wellness destination, a site for multiple new homes, or a lasting conservation legacy. The Rainforest Alliance certified coffee now grown on part of the property can be continued, scaled back, or retired entirely, leaving that land free for gardens, forest, or new purposes. Whatever its next chapter, Tierra Serena offers a rare foundation and the space to bring new visions to life.
